Adam Lindsay Gordon, D.O. was an Australian poet and songwriter who wrote the lyrics to many of Australia's most well-known songs. He is best known for writing "Kookaburra", which is Australia's unofficial national anthem. His parents were William Lindsay Gordon, a Scottish-born police officer, and Katharine Mary "Kitty" McLeod
Gordon was orphaned at the age of four, when his mother died of tuberculosis, and his father died in 1901 at age 22, leaving him an estate valued at £22,000 (around $2.5 million in today's money).
