Richard and Ada lived at "Lincoln Manor," a home built by Richard's father on the Lincoln Farm and is located between Mount Gilead and Greensboro, North Carolina. Ada and Richard had 13 children; their last child was born in 1875, when Richard died in his fifties. Ada Adams Smith was a writer and activist. She wrote about her early life and family history, including her marriage to Richard Smith (Sr.) and their 13 children (9 survived).

Ada wrote about her experiences on the Underground Railroad and her experiences as a slave in North Carolina. She saw herself as an educator and served on the staff of Guilford College in Greensboro from 1843 to 1849. She lectured on African-American education throughout the South. Her book "The Journal of a Residence on a Georgia Plantation in 1830" became a guide for students of African-American history. She is buried beside her husband in Hanging Rock Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Greensboro, NC, where she lived with him from age 16 until his death in 1875.
