50 Quotes About Imperfection

There was a time when I thought I knew everything. I lived in the world of dreams, believing my accomplishments would be enough to make me happy. But they weren’t. I walked the road of illusion, finding myself with no one there to help me through. But now that my eyes are open, I know that my happiness is not dependent on the approval of others. I am now free to create my own truth, and to share it with you. Sometimes we all feel like we’re destined for greatness; destined to make a difference. And sometimes we know it’s not true; that our lives will be ordinary and ordinary is enough for us Read more

But sometimes there are moments when we feel like our lives are destined for greatness despite ourselves; like life itself is steering us toward greatness with purpose and intent. Those moments are what make us most grateful for what we have; they remind us that even though our lives may not always be perfect, they can still be extraordinary. It’s easy to get bogged down by the things that go wrong in life; the difficulties and failures that so often consume us emotionally and spiritually. But it’s important to remember that those challenges are often blessings in disguise; they teach us what we need to know so that we can grow more fully into our potential as human beings.

We must remember that even though our situations may be hard or unpleasant, being imperfect is beautiful because being imperfect means being alive. It means being present in an alive moment, living each experience as it happens instead of allowing it to consume you or let you turn into nothing more than a number on a calendar or a statistic on a report card. It means that no matter how bad things get, no matter how dark things seem, there’s always something there for you to learn from them—a lesson waiting to be learned, a way forward if you will look hard enough for it—so long as you see your situation clearly and recognize the opportunity at hand. And so don’t wait for your circumstances to change before taking action toward your goals; don’t wait for someone else to tell you what will be best for you before doing what makes you happy or fulfilling your purpose here on Earth or helping others do the same; don’t wait for anything at all, because every moment of every day is a new opportunity for self-discovery and growth just as much as it is

It is indisputable that the being whose capacities of enjoyment are low, has the greatest chance of having them fully satisfied; and a highly endowed being will always feel that any happiness which he can look for, as the world is constituted, is imperfect. But he can learn to bear its imperfections, if they are at all bearable; and they will not make him envy the being who is indeed unconscious of the imperfections, but only because he feels not at all the good which those imperfections qualify. dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, is of a different opinion, it is only because they only know their own side of the question. . John Stuart Mill

For as there are billionsof different stars thatmake up the skyso, too, are there billions of different humans thatmake up the Earth. Some shine brighter but all are made ofthe same cosmic dust. O the joy of beingin life with all these people! I speak of differencesbecause they are there. Like the different organsthat make up our bodies. Earth, itself, is one large body. Listen to how it howlswhen one human isin misery. When one kills another, the Earth feels the pang in itschest. When one orgasms, the Earth craves a cigarette. Look carefully, these animals are beauty spots that make the Earth’s face lovelier and more loveable. These oceans are the Earth’s limpid eyes. These trees, its hair. This is an ode to life. The anthem of the world. I will no longer speak of differences, for the similaritiesare larger. Look even closer. There may bedistances between our limbs butthere are no spaces betweenour hearts. I live with the hope that one day, someone, will look into my eyes and see the deepness of my soul, and all the suffering and struggles will finally make sense to the person that can see behind all the imperfections and dust that's been pilled up in all these years. I've had my turns at trying to love people, but it never turned out as planned and I've failed in keeping someone next to me, simply because you can't force someone to be by your side if it's not meant to be, and I've grown to accept that and not fight against it. I've been selfish for far too long in trying to cling on to someone, and I believe nobody is perfect. But as long as I still breathe, I'm willing to let people come into my life, play their part in my life's plan and then let go if it's necessary. Nothing can last forever and it's something we grow to accept. Let time do its' thing and don't get too attached, that's all I can do. Unknown

I am certainly not an advocate for frequent and untried changes in laws and constitutions. I think moderate imperfections had better be borne with; because, when once known, we accommodate ourselves to them, and find practical means of correcting their ill effects. But I know also, that laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths disclosed, and manners and opinions change with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also, and keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy, as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors. Thomas Jefferson

It is said that there are four kinds of horses: excellent ones, good ones, poor ones, and bad ones. The best horse will run slow and fast, right and left, at the driver’s will, before it sees the shadow of the whip; the second best will run as well as the first one does, just before the whip reaches its skin; the third one will run when it feels pain on its body; the fourth will run after the pain penetrates to the marrow of its bones. You can imagine how difficult it is for the fourth one to learn how to run! When we hear this story, almost all of us want to be the best horse. If it is impossible to be the best one, we want to be the second best. That is, I think, the usual understanding of this story, and of Zen. You may think that when you sit in zazen you will find out whether you are one of the best horses or one of the worst ones. Here, however, there is a misunderstanding of Zen. If you think the aim of Zen practice is to train you to become one of the best horses, you will have a big problem. This is not the right understanding. If you practice Zen in the right way it does not matter whether you are the best horse or the worst one. When you consider the mercy of Buddha, how do you think Buddha will feel about the four kinds of horses? He will have more sympathy for the worst one than for the best one. When you are determined to practice zazen with the great mind of Buddha, you will find the worst horse is the most valuable one. In your very imperfections you will find the basis for your firm, way-seeking mind. Those who can sit perfectly physically usually take more time to obtain the true way of Zen, the actual feeling of Zen, the marrow of Zen. But those who find great difficulties in practicing Zen will find more meaning in it. So I think that sometimes the best horse may be the worst horse, and the worst horse can be the best one. If you study calligraphy you will find that those who are not so clever usually become the best calligraphers. Those who are very clever with their hands often encounter great difficulty after they have reached a certain stage. This is also true in art and in Zen. It is true in life. So when we talk about Zen we cannot say, 'He is good, ' or 'He is bad, ' in the ordinary sense of the words. The posture taken in zazen is not the same for each of us. For some it may be impossible to take the cross-legged posture. But even though you cannot take the right posture, when you arouse your real, way-seeking mind, you can practice Zen in its true sense. Actually it is easier for those who have difficulties in sitting to arouse the true way-seeking mind that for those who can sit easily. . Shunryu Suzuki

We live in a society and a culture and an economic model that tries to make everything look right. Look at computers. Why are they all putty-colored or off-fucking-white? You make something off-white or beige because you are afraid to use any other color — because you don’t want to offend anybody. But by definition, when you make something no one hates, no one loves it. So I am interested in imperfections, quirkiness, insanity, unpredictability. That’s what we really pay attention to anyway. We don’t talk about planes flying; we talk about them crashing. . Tibor Kalman

Wounds heal. Scars fade. Awful memories can be overwritten with better ones if given the chance. The little imperfections of our psyches become overshadowed by the people whose love we cherish because they cherish us despite our faults; physical, emotional, spiritual, or otherwise.
