The Silmarillion was a massive undertaking for Christopher Tolkien, his father’s son, to complete. In the span of over 30 years, he managed to weave several thousand pages of content into a single volume, and it is this work that has been the focus of his life’s work. The Silmarillion was not published until after Christopher’s death in 1999 at the age of 72. His son began to compile a series of posthumous works in his honor, which were published between 2002 and 2006 under the title Unfinished Tales
These collections include some additional material from The Silmarillion, but most of the content is from the unpublished manuscript as well as additional writings from Christopher's time as a professor at Oxford. In these works he often comments on his own life and experiences with his father, providing insight into his father's life and characters from Middle Earth.
