Art is a game. Poetry as well. At the end of the day, you either know how to play it or not.

About This Quote

In his interview with David Letterman, Prince says he had a lot of trouble finding a subject for his first album. He first heard about a girl named Susannah, who was a fan of him. She had first seen him at a party and was awestruck by him. When she heard that he would be on David Letterman’s show, she contacted him and asked if he could sing her a song.

Prince then got on the phone with her and sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” as a duet. After the performance, Prince told her “You don’t have to talk anymore, I know who you are now.” This is where the idea of art as a game came from. Art is something that you either know about or not.

If you know about it, then you can play it and your performance will be great. You either know how to do it or not.
