Artistic symbols and myths speak out of the primordial, preconscious realm of the mind which is powerful and chaotic. Both symbol and myth are ways of bringing order and form into this chaos. The word chaos was used by the ancient Greeks to describe a condition of disorder and confusion. And, in their view, disorder and confusion existed in nature itself.
As such, there was no reason to assume that man could improve or change it. Their view was that we would always be subject to the chaos of nature, and therefore we should not try to improve ourselves by trying to control it. This is the origin of the Greek idea that we cannot change reality or ourselves, but we can create illusions that give us a feeling of control.
