It's so hard to believe in anything anymore. I mean, it's like, religion, you really can't take it seriously, because it seems so mythological, it seems so arbitrary...but, on the other hand, science is just pure empiricism, and by virtue of its method, it excludes metaphysics. I guess I wouldn't believe in anything anymore if it weren't for my lucky astrology mood watch. Steve Martin
About This Quote

In this quote from the movie "Me, Myself and Irene", the comedian Jim Carrey is saying that he wouldn't believe in anything anymore if it weren't for his mood watch. In the movie, Jim's character is a hypochondriac. He believes all kinds of things are going wrong with his body, and he wants to fix them. He goes to the doctor and takes a bunch of tests, but it turns out that he can't really get sick at all, and he has a lot of time to think about what's wrong with him.

The doctor tells him that his body just doesn't work like that - instead of feeling sick all the time, people feel sick when they really do have something wrong with them. For example, Jim feels fine when he has a stomachache just because he's scared. But if he didn't have a stomachache, then he wouldn't think there was anything wrong with him at all.

Jim figures out that the only thing in his life that hasn't gone wrong so far is his mood watch: "I keep this little watch in my pocket and I worry about everything in my life. It's like my personal astrology guide for life." Jim's character later realizes that it doesn't matter whether or not his watch is broken; the fact that it still works suggests that something else in life is broken. He says: "First you figure out what's broken, then you go fix it."
