People who give out this type of advice are usually trying to be helpful, but they are often doing more harm than good. The thing is, being practical is not always useful. We all have ideas that are impractical or unrealistic, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth pursuing. If you’re not making progress with your PhD, try to get a job in a related field.
