Peter stands by the gate, And Michael by the throne. 'Peter, I would pass the gate And come before the throne.' 'Whose spirit prayed never at the gate In life nor at the throne, In death he may not pass the gate To come before the throne:' Peter said from the gate; Said Michael from the throne. About This Quote

The parable of the Prodigal Son is often used to illustrate the limits of devotion to material things. It is a story about a son who comes home after living extravagantly with his father's money by the sea. When he returns, his father refuses to receive him, harshly rebuking him for his recent dissolute life. The son, however, is not discouraged by this treatment and returns again to his dissolute ways.

At last, when he comes back for the last time, he arrives with ten servants. This time around, however, his father welcomes him back with open arms and he begins to live lavishly once again. The father then has all of his servants called to witness that they are now set for life.

However, the son is afraid of what will happen when he gets old and how he will be treated by those who would dole out charity on his behalf. That's why he says "Father I want to spend the rest of my life at your side." This is an idiom that means wanting something bad enough you are willing to sacrifice your entire future in order to get it.
