Christianity has its roots in the deep, firm soil of history. Jesus’ incarnation– God invading human history with His presence in the form of man–is on the record. Every time you write the date, you attest to the fact that God entered human history.

About This Quote

Christianity is not some new religion that comes out of nowhere. The Christian faith has its roots in the deep soil of history. Jesus was born to a Jewish family in the city of Bethlehem. He grew up in Nazareth, went out into the land, made disciples, and then died on a cross.

As he began his mission, he spent his years building relationships with people all over Israel. He taught them about himself, including his impending death. He was arrested by the Romans for being a leader of a group of people who were being persecuted by their government.

He was put before the people and asked, “Are you the King of the Jews?” He responded with, “I am the King of the Jews!” He was then taken before Pontius Pilate, who asked him if he was guilty of any crimes against Rome. Pilate then offered an alternative punishment for Jesus. He could pay Rome to spare his life or he could be crucified as king of the Jews.

The crowd shouted for Jesus to be crucified, but Jesus chose to die rather than be executed as king by Rome. His last words are recorded in Matthew 27:46: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” This word “conclude” or “end” can also be translated as “died.” So Jesus never said that he would rise again—he died and then he rose again. When you write down this date, you attest to the fact that God entered human history to save mankind from sin and death through His only Son Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 5:8).
