About This Quote

You cannot be with someone just because you don’t want to hurt him. You have your own happiness to think about. The quote is a line from a play, Act II, Scene 2. In the course of a discussion between a couple, a young man named Pericles states, "I know that if I were in love with her I would want her to love me too." Another character, Damon, disagrees: "In this present state of human affairs no man can be happy without the friendship of another man." In my opinion this quote can be interpreted as saying that you can't just be with another person because they make you happy.

If you do so, then the friendship you have is not genuine. You have to have a reason for being with them at all.
