Here lies Cat. Killed not by fang, but Ferragamos. This quote is taken from a letter written by the American writer Flannery O’Connor to her mother. In the letter, O’Connor describes how she was running in Italy with her husband when she fell and broke her ankle in two places.

She was in bad shape and had to be taken back to the hotel in a wheelchair. Flannery wrote that she began cursing her heels and debating whether or not she should take them off--a painful procedure, they were taped on for support--or keep running with the potential neck breakers. She mentioned how this would make a charming epitaph.

There are two things about this quote that make my skin crawl. One is the use of the word “feet� when describing her feet; the other is the phrase “potential neck breakers.� I will admit that I do not know what these words mean, but I am guessing they are something along the lines of pinchers or claws. This quote makes me think of snakes and I am sure that there is no way Flannery would have ever considered wearing Ferragamos if she had known that they would play a role in causing her death!
