Sometimes there is no choice but to walk into your own house. Far away, you think, and you do not want to see. You come home and you say do not tell me. You say, I have hunted the elk all over the snowfields of the Selway, and I do not want to know what happened here. And then there is a morning you walk in and take a look in your own house, like any traveler. William Kittredge
About This Quote

Robert Goolrick said, “Sometimes there is no choice but to walk into your own house. Far away, you think, and you do not want to see. You come home and you say do not tell me. You say, I have hunted the elk all over the snowfields of the Selway, and I do not want to know what happened here.

And then there is a morning you walk in and take a look in your own house, like any traveler.” This quote is about the survivor's guilt that each one of us can feel after surviving an event where others didn't survive. For example, if the person who lived in the house was shot while trying to get his family out of harm's way. The person looking at his house could feel guilty for not having tried harder to get his family out of the house before it was taken by the shooter, or he could just feel guilty that he survived when so many did not.

It's important to remember that we are all survivors of something no matter how big or small our role may have been in an event like this. We all live with survivor's guilt because we will never know what each one of our friends went through while they were fighting for their lives; all we can do is hope that they made it out alive and honor their memory by taking care of ourselves and helping others who may be dealing with similar situations today.
