As Atwood concludes after a random and informal sampling, men and women differ markedly in the 'scope of their threatenability': 'Why do men feel threatened by woman?' I asked a male friend of mine..'[ M]en are bigger, most of the time..and they have on the average a lot more money and power.' 'They're afraid women will laugh at them, ' he said. 'Undercut their world view.' Then I asked some women students in a quickie poetry seminar I was giving, 'Why do women feel threatened by men?' 'They're afraid of being killed, ' they said'. About This Quote

In a small informal study, a group of female students were asked why they felt threatened by men. They replied with the following: They don't respect us. They're going to take advantage of us. They're going to hurt us physically.

Women are much more threatened by men than men are by women because they believe that it is much easier to kill a woman than a man, because women are softer and more vulnerable, and also because women have been taught from a young age that they need to be careful around males in their lives and to give them space and not get too close to them. This is why women tend to be very afraid of their male partners and will always remain far away from them because they know that if he gets angry or jealous he might react in violent ways and she knows that the consequences of an attack could be fatal so she keeps her distance from him.
