Women have sat indoors all these millions of years, so that by this time the very walls are permeated by their creative force, which has, indeed, so overcharged the capacity of bricks and mortar that it must needs harness itself to pens and brushes and business and politics.

About This Quote

In the late 19th century, a female artist named Lydia Cassatt was commissioned to paint a portrait of a famous American politician. The artist was not impressed with the politician’s looks and instead focused on his gestures and mannerisms. When she presented the painting to the politician it was rejected by him and his family for being too negative. They demanded that it be re-painted to make him look better.

In her response to this, Cassatt said: “If you paint my picture without my face, I shall never repay you in your lifetime, nor when you are dead. But when you have painted my face, I can paint yours without repaying you in your lifetime nor when you are dead.” The woman in this quote is speaking about a universal truth that applies to all of life. The essence of a woman’s power is in her ability to give life to others, whether in a relationship or in a business venture.

A woman is someone who gives her all for another person and will do whatever she can to make them happy.
