This quote comes from a book by Frank McCourt, and it is a story of his son who was born to a young Irish woman who had fallen in love with the idea of marriage. The young man was raised in poverty and eventually dropped out of school after his grandmother died. He ended up living in the sewers of the city and almost died from starvation.
After years of living in poverty, he became obsessed with getting married to this woman who would only see the successes of his life through rose-colored glasses. When he finally got married to her, she quickly discovered that he wasn’t very good at all around the house. She began to complain about everything, including her husband’s appearance, which made him depressed.
Eventually, they divorced. According to Frank McCourt, “you can’t expect people to be happy when you yourself are not happy."
