After the death of Leonid Brezhnev in 1982, there was a struggle to choose a successor. This struggle ended when Yuri Andropov, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1967 to 1982, was chosen. In his first speech after being chosen he said: "I am a man with a small head and a small heart", which is a reference to Brezhnev’s personality.
