About This Quote

This quote by Voltaire is taken from the play, "Zaïre" (1733), in which one of the characters is a man who tries to make people believe that it is enough for him to extinguish the line of the defeated prince (i.e., King Louis XIV). As in many plays, in this one, there is also an element of social commentary in Voltaire’s statement. On the one hand, the play is meant to be humorous with its hero’s claim that he can bring down any prince he wants with just a few words. At the same time, the play asks who would want to be part of such a vile system that can bring down even the most powerful of men?
