About This Quote

During his early adulthood, Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a disease that attacks the nervous system. It causes muscle weakness and atrophy, and eventually leads to paralysis and death. Because of this disease, Hawking is confined to a wheelchair or a computer terminal for most of his life.

However, he has an active mind that leads him to write books about the universe that are popular with the public. This mind is almost always in action. He has said that he has an “excuse” for not saving the universe because of his diagnosis.

This statement implies that his brain does not have enough energy to help him in this task. Although he needs help in order to understand what is happening around him, he feels that there are things in the world more important than helping him in this task of helping others.
