About This Quote

The senate is a place filled with goodwill and good intentions, and if the road to hell is paved with them, then it's a pretty good detour. When I was first elected to the senate, one of my goals was to make sure that everyone who worked in the senate understood that they were there to do good for the country. The senate is filled with people who want to do what's right for their constituents. Unfortunately, some of those people become corrupted by their power.

They start believing the myths that they are hearing, thinking that it’s okay for them to do whatever they want, including lying. I want anyone who works in the senate to know that they are not supposed to be politicians. They are supposed to be servants of the people who elected them.

In this line from Hubert Humphrey, he was trying to remind everyone that it’s not acceptable for senators to engage in unethical or illegal conduct because it makes the whole institution look bad.
