In the above quote from Neil Gaiman's book, Coraline, the mother asks the other mother if she will keep her promise to take care of Coraline. The other mother promises that she will keep her word. The question, however, is why. Why would one person agree to keep another person's word? Why would another person want to be kept in prison? The answer lies in the story's ending.

When Coraline's father comes home and sees that Coraline is gone, he is devastated. He tells his wife that he has lost his daughter and puts her body in the grave. The next day when they go back to see her grave, they find it empty.

It is then they learn that their little girl is still alive after all, though she is very angry at them for what they did to her. How do you think she escaped?
