About This Quote

The movie "Paint Your Wagon" is about the journey of a band of California gold miners to California on a very expensive trip. Some of the miners had never been across the country on a stagecoach before, which didn't come as a surprise to anyone. The very first night, they caroused until late into the night, and by morning, most were hungover and couldn't function properly. When they woke up, instead of sending someone else to do their job, they went back to sleep.

The next morning they got up and continued drinking. The third day they were better, but still too drunk to do anything productive. By the fourth day they were sober enough to start looking for jobs, but there were no jobs for people drunk off their ass.

So they started drinking again, and after two more days of drinking, one of them died out of thirst. The next morning they decided that there was nothing left for them in that town, so they got back on the stagecoach and headed home. A month later their money ran out and they had to go back to work in the mines.

On returning they discovered that their old jobs had been taken over by new bosses who didn't want them for some reason or another. At first they resented it; then they began complaining. After all this time they were still stuck in these jobs with no way forward.

So one night all of them went back to work in the mines, even though it meant that some would die out of thirst again. They continued doing this until finally one night there was no one left who could work in the mines; everyone was dead from lack of water and because it was dangerous work in general. The movie ends with a group celebrating having gone through all this trouble without ever having lost a job or a friend’s respect - only an extra savings account under their beds that was used for buying more drinks at the saloon around town every weekend when everyone found out about their good fortune from someone who no longer worked there because everyone knew what happened to those who couldn't keep up with them by going back to work every time everything fell apart around them.
