When the waiter brought the cheese-board, there was a large carrot carved in the shape of a mermaid sitting between the Dolcelatte and the Pecorino. Teo could have sworn that the carrot-mermaid flexed her tail and plunged her little hand inside a smelly Gorgonzola. 'Tyromancy, ye know, ' remarked the mermaid. 'The Ancient Art of Divination by Cheese.' Then she pulled her tiny hand out and inspected the green cheese-mold on her tiny fingers. 'Lackaday! ' she moaned. 'Stinking! It goes poorly for Venice and Teodora, it do! . Michelle Lovric
About This Quote

Teo is a young Venetian, living in the same city as the Mermaid. The mermaid notices that Teo is feeling sad and depressed. She gives him a stone, telling him that he can use it to predict people's futures. The mermaid then says that the stone has to be prepared in the right way before it can provide information.

She tells Teo that he has to carve his own mermaid out of the cheese block in front of him. He does so, and she advises him on how to use it. He uses it correctly and correctly predicts the future, so she rewards him by giving him a slice of her Gorgonzola cheese.

Later, he sees her at a party, where she is sharing some cheese with another woman. The other woman remarks that this cheese is not very good; she believes that it is mostly molded Pecorino (which tastes like sharp cow's milk), but Teo disagrees, saying that there are plenty of sharp cheeses at the party (one of which was pricked by the carrot-mermaid). The other woman remarks 'Stinking! It goes poorly for Venice and Teodora,' but Teo says that things are better than they were before (just like how they were when he was given the stone).
