About This Quote

The paralysis of potential is essential to the manufacturing of victims. The paralysis of potential is a term coined by Jacques Ellul to describe the process by which modern society creates victims and then destroys them once they become problems. In his book The Technological Society, Ellul offers a variety of examples of this process. For example, he notes that modern society creates an independent and autonomous working class and then proceeds to destroy it once it becomes troublesome.

By doing this, modern society has created a victim. Another example comes from the automobile industry, where workers spend nearly all their time at work and spend very little time with family or friends. As a result, you end up with a bunch of people who feel like victims and don’t do anything about it because they feel helpless and hopeless in trying to change things for themselves.
