I held my breath tightly against the shivers coursing through my body. Darkness ate away the edges of my vision and numbness stole away my fingers. I kept holding though. Watching the last bubble of precious air escape my lips. Then it became all black. But I never let go. Hubert Martin
About This Quote

Edwin Abbott's "Flatland" is a mathematical satire of a two-dimensional world. In it, a square named A Square describes life in Flatland, a two-dimensional world. A Square is introduced to the readers as living in an "Equal Area" world, where all the space is covered by the same amount of space. In this world, there are no angles and no straight lines.

Everything is square and flat. A Square describes what it's like to live in such a world: "It is impossible for me to describe my sensations to you. I can only say that I was conscious of an intense and pervading sense of pain and difficulty; and at the same time was conscious of an equally intense and pervading sense of my own identity." Later on, he goes on to describe how he learned to breathe after holding his breath tightly against the pain: "I now come to my second great discovery - that as long as I held my breath (which I did with great force) against the shivers coursing through my body, darkness ate away the edges of my vision and numbness stole away my fingers.

But as soon as I let go (of my breath), every part of my body became conscious and I was all there."
