When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.

About This Quote

My father told me this when I was 14. He was on the cusp of entering his seventh decade of life, and I was on the cusp of my first. For seven years he had been around my life, and I had not yet realized how much he knew. He was a wise old man with a good heart and a good soul.

We only spoke when we needed to speak, and we spoke in kind and respectful tones. The fact that we spent time together at all was a sign that he cared about me and wanted the best for me. But when I finally recognized how smart my father was, when I finally realized how much he knew when he was 14, I felt so grateful to him.

And in return, I recognized how smart and wise I was when I was 14, too.
