I was done with hesitation. It wasn't just that we'd run out of options, or that so much was riding on the firebird's power. I'd simply grown ruthless enough or selfish enough to take another creature's life. But I missed the girl who had shown the stag mercy, who had been strong enough to turn away from the lure of power, who had believed in something more. Another casualty of this war. Leigh Bardugo
About This Quote

Philoctetes is a Greek mythological hero, very significant in the theme of revenge. The most powerful weapon in the war between the Greeks and Trojans was the fire-breathing bull known as the "firebird." Philoctetes was a Greek warrior taken prisoner by Paris. He witnessed Paris leading his army to victory, but did not fight. When Paris asked him why he had not fought, Philoctetes said that he had no arrows or bow.

He told his story, then asked Paris to spare his life, which he did. He went home to Mycenae, but became afflicted with a terrible pain in his foot. He was healed by nymphs who were satyrs.

The nymphs are often associated with healing herbs or plants, so it is likely that they are linked to this story. When he went back to Troy after being healed, however, the Trojans mocked him for being lame. He took his revenge by killing all of the Trojan women who had mocked him for being lame and blind.
