This quote comes from the words of Tom Creighton, a former Confederate soldier who lead the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. Creighton was a skilled soldier who led several battles in his time, but this one was perhaps his greatest. This battle has been called the bloodiest single day in American history. It began on July 2nd 1863 when Union troops under General Joshua Chamberlain deployed to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to take control of the town.

On July 3rd, the battle began in earnest and lasted for many hours. The Union troops were soundly defeated by Confederates under General Robert E. Lee who had come to Gettysburg with the intention of defending the town.

More than 61,000 troops took part in this battle and more than 21,000 soldiers died.
