In military science, a “loss” or “casualty” is a person that is killed, wounded or captured. In the early days of World War 1, the British Army was hit very hard. One battalion lost 80% of their men. The soldiers were still able to fight at the front, and they fought just as well as those who were not so severely hurt.

This shows that losing 20% of your troop might seem like a lot, but if you have another 80% to take their place it doesn’t really matter so much. In war, you can never have enough troops to replace those who die.
