A team of people set out on a mission or an assignment. They then had to complete that mission or assignment under the direction of one team leader. Then, for some reason, that team leader no longer wanted to lead his group and instead took them out of the mission or assignment. During the action, while working on the mission or assignment, he made it clear that he did not want anyone working under him nor did he want anyone working for him. He then took all of his subordinates out of the mission or assignment. This is essentially what happened to the team Fear stated in this quote. While traveling through Afghanistan, Team Fear was given an order that they did not want to complete. As a result, they lost their leader and were left without orders. They never did get their mission or assignment completed and were left without an organization to lead them. The team ended up having no purpose in life and thus they were sent off into early retirement by their organization.
