About This Quote

We’ve all heard people say that men are too violent. But do we really know why men are violent? In the book Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, author John Gray explains how men and women process information differently. For instance, men tend to be more mechanical and logical. They think in terms of cause and effect and predict what might happen next.

Women tend to be more intuitive and emotional. They think in terms of how they feel and what might happen next. Men tend to be more outwardly aggressive and women tend to be more inwardly aggressive.

Gray uses the example of a man who might say, “I love you so much I would give my life for you” as opposed to a woman who says, “I love you so much I would give my life for you.” The first man has a cause-and-effect relationship; he can clearly describe how he feels without any need for interpretation or emotion. The woman's statement is based on her emotions; it could mean she loves him in a similar way that she loves an inanimate object like her car, but it could also mean that she loves him in the same way she loves her dog or her favorite rock collection. This dichotomy between men and women is not unique to couples; it's part of the way we all process information.
