All this blackness was within him, but that was where it really mattered. It was night without moon or stars, it was a doorless pit in the earth's bowels, it was forever. He felt black ice growing, blooming in his veins. One last sharp feeling was left to him--the bitter taste of failure. Then that went too. All was nothing. Cold and everlasting night, and an everlasting laughter that was older and colder than the stars he would never see again. His heart squirmed wildly in his chest, seeking an escape that was denied it. Laughter like a glacier came again, rolling and crushing all else before it. A bird sang. . Susan Dexter
About This Quote

It is said that Christopher Marlowe is one of the most influential writers in the history of English literature. He was a playwright, poet, and spy. One of his most famous works is "The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus" which was written around 1588. This play features the tale of Dr.

Faustus who sold his soul to the devil, making a pact with him to learn all the secrets of the world. However, Dr. Faustus is warned that he will lose his soul if he fails to complete this task.

The story continues with Dr. Faustus completing his task and indeed losing his soul as a result. His fate is sealed when the devil appears before him and says that he has no need for him any longer as there are many around who are willing to sell their souls to him.

By the time Christopher Marlowe had written this play, he had already lost his own soul many times over by murdering his wife for which he was also condemned to be burned at the stake after being tortured on several occasions.
