About This Quote

The idea of genocide is to kill or have killed everyone in a particular group or ethnic group. An example of genocide would be to kill all the Jews in Germany, because Hitler believed that the Jews should be killed. He believed that they were a threat to Germany and that they should be wiped out. Any group that is targeted for genocide will always have family members fighting to save their lives.

There are dozens of stories about people risking their own safety to rescue others. Take one woman who was watching her husband being tortured by the Japanese, only to realize that she was next on the list for torture. She summoned her strength and risked her own life to save her husband.

That wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t been able to build a community around her. Groups of people can build strength and unity as they protect each other from those who would harm them. We all need these communities around us, both as individuals and as a society as a whole.
