In the 1970s, NASA’s space shuttle program faced a number of issues. One of the major problems was the amount of time needed to load the shuttle with fuel and launch it into space. In order to save time, engineers designed a rocket that could get into orbit in less than four hours. The problem was that the rocket also had to have enough thrust to get back down to Earth after takeoff, which meant that it required far more fuel than originally planned.
To save time, this new rocket was designed with a very short lifespan. Instead of building one large rocket, NASA instead bought several smaller rockets and had them all launched at once. The initial launch did not have enough thrust to get back down safely, but after several launches the rockets were able to land safely.
