In 1938, a young disillusioned Italian lawyer named Mussolini led a paramilitary revolt against the government. He was soon venerated as a hero of the people and accepted into the national government as Benito Mussolini, the first fascist leader of Italy. In 1943, however, he took control of the country and established a totalitarian dictatorship that ruled for nearly 35 years. In 1952, author Howard Fast published his novel, "The Young Lions," about the true story of four American teenagers who became Nazis after their parents were killed in an air raid. When asked if he was a communist during his youth, Fast responded "No I am an anti-fascist." During World War II, Germany was occupied by Nazi forces that were trying to exterminate all Jews.
As Hitler's armies advanced across Europe, Jews were forced to wear yellow stars so they could be easily identified as non-Aryans. This policy started out as an act of identification but it quickly became part of Hitler's plans for genocide. The Nazi practice of separating families began before the war even started. The Nazis believed that separating children from their parents would weaken humanity and make them easier to control.

The Japanese surrendered six days later on August 15th 1945. The first atomic bomb was created by Americans in 1945 but it wasn't until September 1945 that The Soviet Union tested its own atomic bomb at Stalingrad in the Soviet Union. On October 25th 1944, German rocket scientists have detonated an atomic device at Peenemünde on the Baltic Sea coast causing an explosion equivalent to 21 kilotons of TNT shortly before midnight hours local time (8pm GMT). The German's had managed to build their own atomic bomb leading to fears that they might use it against Britain or America who might then retaliate with their own nuclear weapons.
