Elle JasperMy Gullah grandfather is bringing a bag of dust to a vampire war. I feel better.
About This Quote
Gullah is a dialect of English spoken on the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina. The dialect is interesting in that it has its own words for each thing (e.g., "heep" for sheep, "sheep" for people, etc.). One of these words is "dust." The word "dust" is used to describe something that's old, broken, or worthless. However, this dictionary definition doesn't necessarily fit with the words used by the Gullah-speaking people to describe their collection of objects. Among other things, they would say that their dust was "old gold." That's because the GULLAH people see their possessions as something valuable but also as something that will decay over time.
