About This Quote

“After my parents died, I was left to the care of nannies. I never knew my mother. I never knew my father. I was not loved or feared or treated as a child should be.

My childhood was a lonely and unhappy one. There was no one to talk to about what I felt, no one to trust, no one who cared enough to understand me, and besides that, I didn’t know how to talk about what I felt. The only person who ever really understood was my grandmother.

She spoke the language of the heart and we understood each other perfectly. But even she wasn’t there when it all happened. Even she wasn’t there when they took her away from me and beat her up and killed her and buried her in a pauper’s grave, and so I went on alone with my secret pain until my grandson came along when I was eighty years old when he told me he had been in prison since he was fifteen because of his grandfather’s murder and that his father had been in prison since he was eight for stealing cars, and he looked at me with such sadness in his eyes; we both knew we had been robbed of our childhood for something we didn’t do.

And we both knew we were going to get even for it. When we were finished talking, we both cried like babies who had been brought back from the dead by our love for each other.
