About This Quote

There is a common misconception that we all have to like children to love them. That may not be true. Most of the time, we just have to do it. Just as we must love our friends' kids because they are our friends' kids, we must love our own children even if we don't like children.

Sometimes, though, that's impossible. For example, my daughter is 4 years old. The other day I saw her running around and playing in the house and I said to my wife: "She's too old to be climbing on the furniture and pulling all the books off the shelves." My wife replied: "I know; but she's 4 years old and I don't want her to stop doing things like that until she's 10." So I went upstairs and looked at her and thought: "Why am I acting like such a miserable old man?"
