The first line is a quote from the Bible, while lines two through five are from Apollinaire's poem."The wine of a woman from heaven" was probably referring to vin ordinaire as opposed to vin de table as some translations suggest. A woman from Heaven would be an immaculate conception as opposed to a virgin birth.

Apollinair's use of "wine" rather than "wine" or "wine from heaven" may have been due to the fact that Apollinair was a sommelier. He would have been more familiar with the way vin ordinaire describes wine than with the way the phrase "wine from heaven" or "Wine from Heaven" describes wine.
