About This Quote

It is dangerous to prejudge people before you have any real evidence to support your conclusions. To do so is to fall into the trap of prejudice, which plunges you into a world of fear and hate. All too often, we make assumptions about those we meet and those we don't. We make those assumptions based on how people look, who they are, what they say and do—not on the real evidence of who they are as individuals.

To make such assumptions is to live in a world of fear and hate. Prejudice, then, can be thought of as the flip side of stereotyping: we stereotype people by looking at their exterior and associating them with an entire category because we think (and sometimes know) that category embraces them all. We may think that all black folks walk with their hands in their pockets or that all gay men wear pink shirts or that all rich folks drive big cars or that all immigrants drive old cars.

But such stereotyping is not true—only the stereotypes themselves are true.
