About This Quote

This is a song from the musical "The King and I" and was written by Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman. The song is about the closing of the Children's Aid Society (CAS) in Boston in 1872, and how it affected Anna Leonowens. The CAS had been founded in London in 1741 and had spread to other countries including South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The CAS was also called the "Children's Refuge Society".

It was founded to provide protection for ""children under twelve years of age whose parents were unable to support them." Anna Leonowens was a teacher for the children of the governor of Siam. ""When the governor of Siam became ill and died, her salary ceased. She petitioned the governor's son who allowed her to continue teaching his children for a while but eventually she had no choice but to leave.

Anna had applied for work with another governor but was rejected because she did not have a proper education or credentials." After she left, she told her story to the governor's wife who then convinced her husband to help her start a school where she could teach children. Anna named this school "Kindergarten" which means "children's workshop" in German. The governor sponsored her efforts and soon children were coming from all over Thailand to attend Kindergarten.

But problems arose when disagreements arose between Anna and the teacher at Kindergarten. But Anna stood up for herself and demanded that she be treated fairly as an equal with respect given to her as an educated woman with values."
