The odds seemed pretty long from where I was standing, certainly, but then again, I reminded myself, the history of science was in many ways an almanac of highly unlikely victories.

About This Quote

When you are facing odds that seem impossible, there is no point in trying to give up. When you find yourself in a situation where you can’t see a way out and you keep falling every time you make a move, it is good to remind yourself of the history of science. Studies have shown that most scientific breakthroughs come about when scientists refuse to give up and keep trying. The Titanic was one such example of this.

The Titanic was the world’s largest ocean liner when she was built in 1911. At her inaugural voyage in 1912, she plowed into an iceberg and sank with over 1,500 people on board. Although the ship had been built at great expense, not much could be done to recover any of the wreckage and only about 300 bodies were recovered.

Today, we know that the Titanic sank because she was in an area of water known as “the iceberg alley” where so many ships had gone down in history. She hit an iceberg and sank with such force that it tore a hole in her hull and began to flood the ship from the inside out.
