About This Quote

Good cops make their bosses look good, and Hector was a one-man beauty school. One of the things that makes me appreciate police work is the ability to do something that brings joy to someone else’s life. Not long after getting out of college, I started working for a community agency in Chicago. The job involved doing social service work to help people get back on their feet, or in some cases, off their knees.

During my time there, I met a guy by the name of Hector. He was one of the poorest people I ever met. His eyes were sunken, his teeth were yellowed and he smelled like garbage.

He had no job, no money and nowhere to sleep at night. Every day he would sit on a bench near one of our offices just waiting for hours on end to be able to get a few dollars for food or a bus pass so that he could get home. One day, a woman stopped by with a bag of groceries she had just picked up from her local grocery store. She saw Hector and gave him enough money for food for the night and a bus pass so that he could get home safely.

She handed him the money and said “God bless you,” as she walked away from him down the sidewalk. Hector started weeping as he clutched the bag of groceries tightly in his hands. For the first time in his life, he had enough food to eat that night and more importantly enough money to be able to get home safely.

That woman made me feel good about my job because she made a difference in someone’s life by investing her money into someone else’s life instead of spending it on herself or buying something she didn’t need. Later that week, I had an opportunity to help out with some training sessions at one of our agencies as part of my job duties as an employee there as well as an employee at another agency as part of my volunteer work with them as well. As we sat around talking about what we did for a living and how we got into it, we found ourselves talking about Officer Hector and what kind of cop he was and how much we liked him and how great his work ethic is and what kind of person he is and all that kind of good stuff you talk about when you work with someone who is doing such great things for others in your community you care so much about because they are making such an impact on people's lives. You see
