However, I don't think it is relevant. This is a funny quote because this was a father who had a son who was a psychiatrist on a TV show. It would be a funny joke if a psychiatrist's father said something like this to him.

The comment also brings in the idea of sweeping things under the rug when they are not needed in the first place. This is something that happens quite often in life to avoid problems or issues that are not important.
