Gradually it became known that the new race had a definite purpose, and that purpose was to chart and possess the whole country, regardless of the rights of its earlier inhabitants. Still the old chiefs cautioned their people to be patient, for, said they, the land is vast, both races can live on it, each in their own way. Let us therefore befriend them and trust their friendship. While they reasoned thus, the temptations of graft and self-aggrandizement overtook some of the leaders. . Charles Alexander Eastman
About This Quote

The book is about two of the most important men in the history of South Africa; Baster and Jake. Baster is the white leader, who was sent to teach the black people about farming and how to live on the soil. Baster ended up becoming greedy and selfish, believing that it was wrong for him to take any land for himself. He wanted everyone to work together for one goal, all for the good of the country.

Jake is the black leader, who believed in helping others rather than taking land away from them. Jake was always finding ways to help people in need, whether it be feeding them or giving them shelter if they needed one. Gradually it became known that these two leaders were not working together; all the while Jake kept his secret plans hidden because he didn’t want to give away anything that would benefit him or his people.

I think this quote is really important because it shows how everyone can be greedy for something they deserve if they are not aware of what truly matters in life.
