However, it is much more likely that they are intentionally trying to avoid the real world, which is simply too much to handle. People who spend their time reading or writing are able to escape the stress of the outside world.

Reading helps them find an escape from reality, but it can also help them learn things that will help them in the real world. It's only natural for someone who doesn't have too many other responsibilities to want to retreat into a fantasy world for a while once in awhile. They are not fooling anyone, though, because everyone can see what they are doing.
