In these lines, George Eliot tries to show that "not trying to repair Jude" is not only neglectful and immoral but also stupid and useless. Before we can try to repair others we must diagnose their problem and then see if we can solve it. This is the only way we can know if we ought to attempt repairs or not. It seems like it would be foolish to try solving a problem when you don't know what the problem is, but if you do nothing at all, you don't know if it's fixable or not. If you were trying to repair something and couldn't get anywhere, you'd never know what you could have done differently in order to fix it.
