This is a quote that most of us have heard at one point or another. This is a cheesy line that people have used to try to lighten the mood. However, by saying “The dream was not a dream” you are saying that all dreams are not actually dreams. The only way the dream could be real is if it was your dream.
That would mean you are awake right now, but this quote does not actually say that. It only says that the dream was not a dream. It does not say that the dream was real, only that it wasn't a dream.
You could reply with “Well, it wasn't my dream” or “I didn't have a dream about you last night!” but those do not make this quote better.
