About This Quote

This quote comes from the short story, The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. The story takes place in England in the late 1800s. The narrator, Miles, tells the story of his sister, Flora. She is a governess who has been hired to look after two children at a country estate.

The children are twins named Peter and Catherine. Catherine is one year older than Peter, but she acts much younger than her age. She behaves so mischievously towards her older brother that he begins to worry about her well-being.

The children also don’t get along with their governess, Mrs. Grose. Miles told the story to his friend Martin, who was not impressed by what he heard.

He then asked Miles how he could convince himself that there was nothing wrong with the situation between his sister and the children (Grose). The answer to Martin’s question is quite simple: Let go of all reason and let your emotions guide you.
