If facts were enough to persuade people of things, no one would have sex. This is the kind of thing I say when someone asks me what I know about a particular subject, and I’m asked to prove it. Statements like this poke fun at the tendency of science and science fiction writers to pretend that their work is driven by fact. The fact is that they need to convince you that it is driven by fact, and then they’re going to use many facts to do that. They’re not going to start with a bunch of facts.
